BY MICHAEL ABRAMS AND JULIA TAYLOR KENNEDY

TRADE PAPERBACK ORIGINAL

Since September 11, 2001, more than 2.6 million Americans have served in the military – spanning the two longest wars in US history. As men and women come home to heal from their experiences and begin new lives, they find themselves unable move up the ranks in a workforce that properly value and grow their skill sets. Culled from an analysis of national survey of more than 1,000 US military veterans who are working full-time in white collar occupations, Mission Critical: Unlocking the Value of Veterans in the Workforce (CTI, November 10, 2015) gives hands-on tools on how to grow and retain the vast talent, technological and leadership sills these men and women can offer.

The good news is many corporations have launched successful hiring initiatives, ranging from The Department of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative led the charge to get 500,000 vets hired by 2014; JPMorgan Chase has gathered 101 companies with the goal of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020. These initiatives are a great start, however, little research examines how veterans fare once they enter the civilian workforce. According to CTI, 64% of veterans say they’re not using 3 or more of their skills that could be relevant in the corporate context. Nearly 40% say that senior leaders are not capable of seeing their full potential. Once veterans get through the doors of corporations, they languish. Returning Veterans now change jobs twice within the first three years of civilian employment.

In this groundbreaking new book, experts Abrams and Kennedy offer the best practices that employers can use to help veterans succeed in the workplace.Providing inspirational stories of success, Mission Critical: Unlocking the Value of Veterans in the Workforce. They offer ways to ultimately help ambitious veterans create a meaningful life in the civilian workplace.
